Guide to your new Coach Dashboard (managing classes, rosters, and more)

Overview

The Coach dashboard is the teacher homepage on Khan Academy. You can always get back to it by clicking the top-center Khan Academy logo, or by clicking your name in the top right-hand corner of the screen and choosing Coach dashboard from the drop-down menu. The redesigned and more class-centric Coach Dashboard provides an easier-to-use, faster, and more scalable coaching experience.

Classes

The Classes page allows you to view and easily access any classes that you’ve created. You can also add a new class from this screen.

Clicking on a class will take you to its Assignments tab, where you can see active assignments, including their names, due dates, assignment dates, completion levels, and more. Check out the Assignments Guide for more information on this feature! For all classes, the Activity, Roster, and Settings tabs will also appear in this view.

In the Activity tab, you can see the time that students have spent on their work. Dark bars represent time spent outside of school hours (8 AM to 3 PM) and light bars represent times spent during school hours.

Hovering over a student’s bar will give more details about how the time was spent.

The Roster tab shows students who are enrolled in the class and gives the option for adding new students with Google Classroom, email invitations, by creating new accounts, or with a class code.

Note: To add students that you already coach to a class you have created, use the Students tab. Select the checkbox next to the students you want to add, and select “Actions” and then “Add to Class”.

The Settings tab allows you to change the class name, subject, whether it is set up for coaching on the SAT, and whether it is synced with Google Classroom. It also allows you to subscribe to a weekly class summary and to delete the class.

Note: If you are a math teacher using missions with your students, then you have access to two additional reports. Follow the links to learn more about the Progress tab.

 

Students

The Students page gives a list of all students you are currently coaching. From this page you can add new students, add your current students to classes, or stop coaching students.

Managing Rosters

How to add additional students without Khan Academy accounts to an existing class

1. Make sure you’re on your Coach dashboard. You can get there by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting Coach dashboard from the drop down menu.  

2. To add an additional new student, click on the name of a class. Don’t have a Khan Academy class set up yet? Learn how to create one here

3. Choose the Roster tab near the top of the screen.

4. When you are on the Roster tab, click on the Add New Students link.

How to remove students from a class

Do you need to remove a student from a class? We know you are sorry to see them go!

  1. Make sure you’re on your Coach dashboard. You can get there by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting Coach dashboard from the drop down menu.  
  2. Click on a specific class and then choose the Roster tab near the top of the screen.
  3. Hover your cursor over the student name. Two links will appear to the right. Click on the Remove from class link.

How to stop coaching a student

  1. Make sure you’re on your Coach dashboard. You can get there by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting Coach dashboard from the drop down menu.  
  2. Go to the Students tab of your Coach Dashboard homepage.
  3. Select one or multiple students by clicking the boxes on the right-hand side of the list of students. Click on the down arrow to the right of the word Actions on the right hand side at the top of the student list and select Stop coaching. This will remove selected students from ALL classes.

How to rename students

1. Make sure you’re on your Coach dashboard. You can get there by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting Coach dashboard from the drop down menu.

2. Click on the Students tab.   You will see that students are listed by their usernames. To change that, hover your cursor over the student name. Two links will appear to the right. Click on the Edit display name link. This will open a field where you can change the name to whatever  will make it easiest for you to identify and organize your students.

Like things in alphabetical order? Click on the little arrow next to the words Student Name at the top of the list of students to put the list in alphabetical order. Click it again for reverse alphabetical order!
