Is JavaScript the same as Java?

We teach JavaScript on Khan Academy, not Java. Despite the similar names, they are very different programming languages.

Java was invented before JavaScript, and was popular in the 90s, when JavaScript was just being born. When the advertising department was trying to come up with a name for the new programming language, they named it “JavaScript” because they wanted people to associate it with the then-popular Java programming language.

Unfortunately, it’s now led to many people (even programmers!) getting confused between the two languages. Hopefully, when you invent a programming language and name it, you’ll name it something completely new and different. :-)
