Why was the Average Instructional Progress column removed from MAP Accelerator reports?

We recently removed the Average Instructional Progress column from the administrator data dashboard. In the past, administrators could find this column under Progress Overview > Teachers.

After reviewing student progress data across all of our partner districts, we found this metric to be misleading in how it was reporting students’ progress. Data listed under the Average Instructional Progress column could sometimes be misleading due to the fact that students might be rostered in more than one class. Some reasons for this include: 

  • MAP Growth rosters placed students in multiple classes under one teacher.
  • The presence of first-semester and second-semester classes listed separately within the district’s student information system.
  • Students may have more than one math teacher, but the same MAP Accelerator pathways. 

For an example of the first scenario, in which a student has made ~110% progress on their goals, but the Average Instructional Progress column shows the student’s progress at 430%, due to being rostered in four separate classes under one teacher.

The example above reveals that the Average Instructional Progress column credits student progress to all of the student’s classes for work done in any one of the student’s classes.

In other words, the student above has just completed work in one class, but their progress is reported across all four classes and summed together in the Average Instructional Progress column, in effect quadrupling the student’s actual progress reported in the Administrator report.

Going forward, we recommend looking at Average Learning Minutes and Skills Leveled Up columns as metrics that more accurately reflect student progress, and are consistent with our recommendations for MAP Accelerator usage and progress.
