Totally agree. I now have to spend 5 minutes each night trying to figure out where we left off. Previously one could open a particular grade and see instantly what % was completed, and then view the entire grade's table of contents and easily see which topics have been completed.

Now I have to open each topic to see what has been completed.

In support of what Rhondavw mentions:

    1. Before, in the list of all subjects, you could see the percentage completion next to each subject; now you have to click on a subject and then scroll down to see the progress circle. If I'm not mistaken, the list of subjects used to be broken down by category, e.g., Math, Science, rather than listing all of them.

    2. The Explore page, IIRC showed a progress circle and percentage completion next to each topic. Now it only lists the topic titles and overall progress circle at the bottom.

    3. The Table of Contents page used to show percentage completion next to each topic by means of shading around the perimeter of the topic icon. Now the topic icon is bare.

    4. The individual topic pages also used shaded circles to indicate whether a particular video/exercise had been viewed or completed, so you could instantly know where you had left off by drilling down through the summary (Explore), Contents and individual topics pages.

    5. I just uncovered another deficiency. In the individual topics, once a video had been fully watched or an exercise completed, the shaded circle remained shaded. Now, instead of the shaded circle there are rectangular icons next to each video/exercise and they are marked with a checkmark if you've fully watched/completed it. However, if you position your cursor over the rectangular icon or over the adjacent text, the checkmark disappears, giving you the mistaken impression that you still have to watch/do it.

IMHO everything could be condensed to one mission page by doing away with the "Skills Up Next For You' section and replacing it with the old table of contents which accurately marked your progress through a particular grade. We never use the "Next Skills" feature because it doesn't include the matching videos so you have to go find them first anyway and sometimes out of order subjects get added by an errant click. Overall we find it much better to be able to see where you are in relation to the rest of the grade before starting.

Yeah. Seems like KA has restored the previous dashboard interface.

Rhondavw, you wrote "Seems like KA has restored the previous dashboard interface". I don't see any changes (and I logged off and back on just to make sure). Also, the page with an HTML title (i.e., what appears at the very top of the browser) of "Dashboard" which has a URL of https://www.khanacademy.org/mission/<some_subject> never really change much (only the top "header" is somewhat different), although I suspect that when you say "dashboard interface" you're actually referring to the general layout and interaction process of the subject/topic/video/article pages.

Joe, I happened to be looking at KA Partner Content when my daughter pointed out that the layout was the old version. I then went to math and from the Mission Page - https://www.khanacademy.org/mission/cc-seventh-grade-math?ref=current_missions - of 7th grade and when i clicked on the SEE ALL 7TH GRADE link at the upper left it takes me back to the older Table of contents layout with the old big circular icons etc.

And when I click on one of those old icons it takes me to the old sub-table of contents that shows graphically what has and hasn't been done.

Joe, my husband mentioned that he had reset our browser and removed any cookies. Maybe that will help.

It may help to provide an actual snapshot of what the old interface looked like. Fortunately, the web archive has captured this:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20150206214739/http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics

has the basic layout of a subject and if you click on "Subjects" in the header, you can see that it only subjects under a given category, not all the topics in the KA.

    and

    https://web.archive.org/math/algebra-basics/core-algebra-foundations

has the layout of a topic.

Yes, removing cookies was what I thought may help, before reading your comment. However, I cleared all khanacademy.org cookies, restarted the browser and I'm *still* seeing the new interface. I even tried logging on another browser (Chromium, I normally use Firefox) and still no luck.

What is frustrating is that I posted this comment nine days ago, yet nobody from Khan has bothered to even acknowledge the issue. I realise that KA is free (as in beer), but I would much prefer it were free as in free speech, i.e., open source, so that support issues like this would be addressed more promptly.

Joe, Can you confirm that the screen captures I posted are not what you see?

Maybe try the partner content and see what is there.

Very frustrating I'm sure. I'm afraid that I will somehow revert back to the "new" interface. :(

Yes, I don't see what you posted. If I visit that same page, I see this: I'm not sure what is "partner content". Is that for individuals who are teachers?

Joe, if you go to the main KA page - as if you found it for the first time - o the upper left, to the right of the KA logo there is a drop down "SUBJECTS" list.

On there is "Partner Content" which is videos etc from outside sources. they should also be arranged like the math was / is.

Joe,  I can't imagine this had anything to do with it but occasionally a ? will pop up in the lower right asking if KA was helpful today and if you found everything easily. The other day I answered "No" and "Not Easily" for the first time.

Regarding the "Was KA helpful today?", I don't think that matters. I generally dismiss it or if I'm particularly annoyed by the intrusive prompt, I respond negatively.

As far as partner content, the Subjects dropdown has been changed. I can still see what it looked like in the past, but only in the Internet Archive https://web.archive.org/web/20150206214739/http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra-basics by clicking on Subject at the top right. That displays a three-column layout, the first (left) column is blank, the middle has a list of top level categories (Home, Math, Science, etc.) and the right, wider column has topics for one category. In the middle column, there is Partner Content, and if I hover or click on that, it shows the relevant topics under that (two subcategories: Museums and Partners). I also see the partner content in the Archive if I click Browse All in the second column and visit https://web.archive.org/web/20150206214723/http://www.khanacademy.org/library and scroll to the bottom.

However, the new Subjects (note plural) dropdown is a four-column layout: the first for Math, second for Science and Economics and finance, third for Arts and humanities and rightmost for Computing and Test prep. Partner content appears to have been removed (if the same arrangement had been kept, it would follow Test prep) and there's no Browse all or equivalent.

Head scratcher. I'm using safari but tried KA on a PC with Explorer and not even logged into KA and it came up fine like it used to. All the subjects are viewable under the subjects like and expand just like math does with the icons vs little video screens.

Joe, I just logged out and logged into another child's account and KA was using the new interface. Ack!

But when I logged back into the first child's account it reverted to the old interface.

I dusted off a Windows 10 laptop and tried accessing KA. First on Firefox, it came up with the old Subjects dropdown but when I clicked on a subject it presented the new interface. I then cleared all cookies and history, turned off Privacy Badger on KA, and restarted FF. This time it presented the new all-in-one Subjects dropdown and of course, the new interface throughout.

Just in case, I ran Microsoft Edge (never used it before, although I've used IE some eons ago). The funny thing is it shows the old Subjects dropdown, but the new interface elsewhere. Definitely a head scratcher.

Anyway, I've reported this as a problem to KA. Maybe I'll get some feedback that way.

Here is another example of the deficiencies of the new interface. The first screen capture is how a video article is shown:
The video is displayed in a window which is about 8.5in x 4.5 in and has two useless black areas on either side. The ticker showing the energy points sits right in the middle of the video, obscuring part of it.

This is a capture of the same video lesson from the Internet Archive, https://web.archive.org/web/20160106185022/https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra2/advanced-equations-and-inequalities/solving-equations-by-graphing/v/estimating-a-solution-to-nonlinear-system-with-calculator-part-2 :

The Archive did not capture the actual video or the energy points ticker. However, I'm quite sure the white area which measures 11.75in x 7.25in, was devoted entirely or almost entirely to the video display and the energy points were shown on the top right hand corner, where they rarely interfere with the lesson content. The video dimensions went from about 85 sq in to 38 sq in, i.e., less than half the space and therefore twice as hard to read or see clearly.

Joe, my videos look like the archived version with the video taking up most of the remaining screen to the right of the table of contents.  It exists somewhere obviously.

Joe, unfortunately both of my children's accounts have now switched to the new layout. I am very frustrated as the new layout makes KA practically unusable for us.

    Hello Rhonda,

I'm sorry to hear that. As I think I mentioned, I reported this as a problem, https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/135089 and someone named Aaron Wallach responded almost immediately, essentially dismissing it: "Thanks for the feeback! The new layout is the same for everyone, there is no way to go back to the 'old version'."

I replied trying to find out if there's at least some way to escalate the issue, but the issue was marked Closed. I noticed this and posted another reply (which marked it Open), but it's been in limbo since then.

At this point I was going to share some workarounds that I had been using, in particular to watch the videos in larger views (which may not affect your children as much), but I'm happy to say that it seems that most of the old interface has been restored (at least in my case, see below). The video area is still small and the energy points are displayed in the top center obscuring some of the video but at least the layout has been mostly restored.

    All the best,

Hi Joe, Yes not impressed with the zendesk support so far. I had two different version of the site displaying and the "support" apologized if that was the "impression" I had as if I was making it up.

It would be nice and I would think simple if KA just issued a simple explanation of the changes and rational behind them.

Joe, there is a KA reddit page that seems to be moderated by KA staffers. I'm trying there to see what the changes were intended to accomplish.
